On Saturday I began my travel to the Philippines with this amazing group of teachers from all over the U.S. as part of the Teachers for Global Classrooms program.
I took 3 planes to travel to the Philippines. The first was a 2 hour flight from D.C. to Detroit, Michigan, followed by a 13 hour flight to Tokyo, Japan, and then a 4 hour flight to the capital city of the Philippines, Manila. Upon arrival, we got our bags and headed to the hotel. Luckily, the traffic wasn't too bad so our drive to the hotel was pretty quick. After such a long trip, I was pretty tired so I went up to check out my room and get a good night's sleep. First graders, how many hours was I flying on an airplane? Add them up and tell me in the comments below!

Hi Mrs. Kowalevicz! We are so glad you made it safely to Manila! We got to look at a map to see where Manila is! We also found Washington D.C., Detroit and Tokyo! We then used our "count on" strategy and found out you spent 19 hours in an airplane! WOW! That's a long time! What time was it when you got to Manila? What kinds of things did you do on the airplane?

Hi first graders! Kiss your brain for figuring out how many hours I was on the plane! I did lots of different things while I was on the plane - I slept when it was nighttime, read a couple books, and watched many movies! I also ate a few meals and talked to the other teachers traveling with me. All of that helped the time go faster! Have you ever taken a long plane ride?

We also got 19 hours! What is it like to be in the Philippines? How big is the city of Manila?

Hi First Graders! Pat yourselves on the back -- you got the correct total number of hours! Manila is a big city; it reminds me of New York City. More than 11 million people live in Manila! There are lots of cars; it can take hours to drive a short distance away. I'm glad to see you're reading my blog -- keep those questions coming! :-)
