This morning our group woke up early so that we could get ready for a long day of travel. Today we depart Guatemala City and head northwest through the Western Highlands. We will travel by van, and the trip will take approximately 9 hours (including several stops along the way). I've got my snacks and am ready to hit the road! Guatemala is a mountainous country. Two mountain chains enter Guatemala from west to east, dividing Guatemala into three major regions: the highlands (where the mountains are located), the Pacific coast (south of the mountains), and the Petén region ( north of the mountains). The Western Highlands stretch from the outskirts of Antigua all the way to the Mexican border. The region is mountainous, with a range of volcanoes on its south side and the tall mountain ranges (the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes) that form the northern side. The views are breathtaking!
